Voyageurs National Park entry requirements

Voyageurs National Park does not charge an entrance fee.

• Voyageurs charges nothing to enter, by car or by boat. Every fee in this park is for something else: camping, houseboat permits, ranger-led boat tours, winter equipment rental, or special use permits.

Voyageurs National Park has no timed-entry system.

Nothing here is required in 2026.

• Park open 24 hours a day, year-round. Services and activities are limited outside visitor center hours. Rainy Lake Visitor Center is the only year-round visitor center; Kabetogama Lake, Ash River and Crane Lake visitor centers are closed for the winter. Rainy Lake Visitor Center winter hours (Nov 14 - Mar 30) are 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Friday through Monday only, and it is closed April 1 - May 22.
• Water access: ice conditions in early spring and late fall can make sites unreachable. This is a condition warning, not a permit or a closure - nothing is required and nothing is issued. No dates are published for freeze-up or ice-out; they vary year to year.
• Backcountry campsites unavailable from April 1 until the Friday before the MN fishing opener. Open through the end of March for winter camping. No end date is recorded because the park states 'the Friday before the MN fishing opener' rather than a calendar date.
• Rainy Lake and Kabetogama Lake ice roads (winter only, conditions permitting). No permit or reservation is needed to drive the ice road. Open to cars and trucks under 7,000 lbs gross vehicle weight; snowmobiles are not permitted on the ice road. Speed limit 30 mph. Routes vary year to year and the road may be closed or shortened for safety; no fixed open or close dates are published.
• Parkwide campfire ban and fire restrictions in effect. Gas and propane stoves remain permitted. The restriction stays in effect until rescinded; the July 30 end date is the date carried in the NPS alert record and may be extended. Parkwide
• Kettle Falls powerline project - work vessels on Namakan Lake, July - October 2026. This is a boating-caution advisory, not a closure: keep 100 yards from work vessels, no-wake within 500 yards of active zones, watch for floating cables and anchored equipment. The park states 'July - October 2026' without day-level dates; the start and end recorded here are month boundaries, not park-published days.

• Ranger-led tour boat tickets (optional, fee, reservable on Recreation.gov). Optional - you do not need a tour boat ticket to enter or use the park. Interagency Senior and Access passes give 50% off boat tours.

  • Non-peak season: all sites $10/night. Peak season: fees vary by site type and the park links to a fee table rather than printing amounts, so no single peak figure is recorded. All tent campsites carry a reservation fee plus nightly amenity fees.
  • Peak season runs from the Friday before the Minnesota Fishing Opener through October 15; non-peak runs October 16 through the Thursday before the Minnesota Fishing Opener.
  • Minnesota statute sets the Fishing Opener two weeks before the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend; the park does not print the 2026 calendar date, so no season start date is recorded here.
  • Happy Landing (K11) and Camel Back Island (K3) on Kabetogama Lake are closed April through July for bald eagle nesting.
  • Backcountry campsites are open through the end of March for winter camping, then unavailable for reservation from April 1 until the Friday before the MN fishing opener.
  • The park has no entrance fee, so a campsite reservation has no effect on entry.
