Release detail: Peak season trips March through November: online up to three months in advance on Recreation.gov, or walk-in. Winter trips December through February: walk-in only, issued up to 48 hours in advance. Pickup at the Visitor Center from 8 a.m. until one hour before closing.

Fee detail: Cost is $10/permit + $5/person to obtain a permit. This is in addition to the park entrance fee.

Exceptions and limits

• Not needed for day hiking, including Navajo Loop, Queen's Garden or the Rim Trail.
• Backcountry campsites are limited to 6 people per regular site and 15 per group site.
