Great Smoky Mountains National Park entry requirements

Great Smoky Mountains National Park does not charge an entrance fee.

• Great Smoky Mountains charges NO entrance fee — you can drive through and stop briefly for free. What most visitors actually need is a Park It Forward PARKING TAG, a separate requirement: it applies only if you park for longer than 15 minutes, it is not an entrance fee, and an America the Beautiful pass does not substitute for it. No entrance-fee amounts are recorded because no such fee exists.

Nothing here is required in 2026.

• No park-wide timed entry or entry reservation at Great Smoky Mountains in 2026. One narrow exception: during the Elkmont synchronous firefly viewing event (May 20-27, 2026) access to the Elkmont area after noon was restricted to lottery-won vehicle reservations and registered Elkmont campers — covered by the firefly lottery rule.   • "Daily - $5 / Weekly - $15 / Annual - $40". The weekly tag is described elsewhere on the page as covering up to seven days. "Parking tags are not replaceable, refundable, transferable, or upgradable".
  • No tag is needed if you drive through without stopping, or park for 15 minutes or less.
  • "Parking tags will not be required" on the 2026 federal free entrance days.
  • Holders of a disability placard or disability license plate are exempt.
  • School groups with an approved waiver application are exempt.
  • Permitted researchers are exempt during research activities.
  • Burials, cemetery visits, Decoration Days, and First Amendment activities are exempt with an exemption placard.
  • An America the Beautiful / Senior / Access / Military pass does NOT substitute for a parking tag.
  • "Obtaining a backcountry camping permit does not exempt you from the parking tag requirement.".
  • "Display of physical parking tags in each vehicle is required. Digital representations are not accepted.".
  • "Purchasing a parking tag does not guarantee you a parking spot.".
  • Anywhere inside the park boundary. Tags are not location-specific.
  • Verbatim from the NPS frontcountry camping page: "Frontcountry campers parked at their designated campsite will not be required to have a parking tag. If parked elsewhere in the park, a parking tag is required." So a campground reservation covers your car only while it sits on your own campsite — the moment you drive to a trailhead you need a tag. A backcountry permit gives no exemption at all.

• Cades Cove Loop Road is closed: The loop is otherwise "open sunrise to sunset each day".
• Kuwohi Road: Dates recorded here are the OPEN window; the road is closed to vehicles outside it.
• Secondary scenic roads have 2026 seasonal open: Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail: 4/17-11/29.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has no shuttle system.

Nothing here is required in 2026.

• Frontcountry campground reservations — and the parking-tag exemption they do (and do not) give you. Per-campground 2026 opening dates and nightly rates are not available from the NPS frontcountry camping page, so they are not listed here.
• LeConte Lodge is the park's only in-park lodging and takes reservations. Not needed to enter or visit the park.

• Elkmont synchronous firefly viewing

  • "$1 fee" to enter the lottery, plus a "$29 reservation fee" if selected, which "covers the reservation, portable restrooms, supplies and staffing". Separate from the parking tag.
  • "Access is restricted after noon during the viewing period to vehicles with reservations and registered campers in Elkmont Campground" — so before noon the restriction does not apply.
  • Limit of one lottery application per household per season.
  • Each reservation admits one vehicle with up to seven occupants.
  • A confirmed Elkmont Campground reservation for those nights lets you into the restricted area after noon without winning the lottery — the news release names "registered campers in Elkmont Campground" alongside reservation holders.

• Backcountry camping permit
